Terra50 is a new global initiative dedicated to finding, assessing, validating and sharing climate solutions that are already working in cities around the world. Its first edition launches in 2026 at the Smart City Expo World Congress (Barcelona), the leading event for cities, and on Tomorrow.City.

Terra50  is focused on identifying and showcasing 50 innovative solutions addressing today’s most pressing climate challenges in cities. The goal and relevance of Terra50 lie in making current urban dynamics visible and translating them into an accessible format that enables replication by partners in multiple cities.

The 50 solutions selected for each edition are researched, assessed and contrasted with the people and organisations behind them. Alongside them, the Terra50 Radar identifies a broader selection of solutions worth exploring, building a growing landscape of climate action worldwide. Conceived as a long-term platform aligned with the 2050 horizon, Terra50 is designed to evolve through annual editions, adding new solutions and accumulating knowledge year after year as urban challenges intensify and new responses emerge. The 2026 edition is therefore not an endpoint, but the starting point of a growing shared resource on climate solutions in practice.

Covering urban transformation areas

Terra50 covers a broad spectrum of urban transformation areas, including enabling technologies; energy and other vectors such as water management, nature-based solutions, materials and waste; mobility; infrastructure and building; governance and economy; living and inclusion; and the blue economy. These areas reflect the systemic nature of the transformation cities must undergo, where digital infrastructure, energy systems, built environments, governance models, and social dynamics are deeply interconnected. This broad perspective also shapes Terra50’s approach to climate optimism: solutions do not come from technology alone, but also from new models of governance, inclusion, climate justice, collaboration and social innovation.

Not a report, a living platform

Rather than being a report or a static collection of case studies, Terra50 is conceived as a living and accessible platform that translates existing knowledge into action. It takes a deliberate approach to exploration: searching, assessing, contrasting and validating before sharing. By curating real, implemented cases from around the world, it aims to make innovation tangible, transferable, and adaptable, enabling cities, organizations, and professionals to learn from what works and explore new applications in different contexts. In a context of enormous environmental challenges, Terra50 starts from a simple premise: understanding the problems is essential, but it is no longer enough. We also need to identify what is working, understand why, and help those solutions go further. Ultimately, Terra50 seeks to act as a catalyst for connection and change, linking proven solutions with urgent challenges and contributing to the acceleration of more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive urban systems.

A team specialized in innovation exploration

The initiative is driven by a team specialized in innovation exploration, with a cross-cutting perspective that is not limited to a single sector. It brings together knowledge and practices from different fields and applies them to urban climate challenges.

This approach enables the identification of relevant solutions, making them understandable and connecting them to real urban needs, acting as a bridge between what already exists and what cities urgently require.
