Urban Wetlands
Nature-Based Flood and Water Management
International
Highlight
Restored and constructed wetlands absorb stormwater, reduce flooding and improve water quality while creating habitat.
Extended description
Urban wetlands are restored or constructed ecosystems integrated into cities to manage stormwater, reduce flood peaks and improve water quality naturally. Their soils and vegetation slow and store runoff, filter pollutants and provide habitat, cooling and recreational space. As nature-based infrastructure, wetlands can complement or replace conventional drainage works while delivering multiple benefits for climate adaptation, biodiversity and urban wellbeing.
