Highlight

Public landscapes designed as diverse edible ecosystems that provide food, shade, biodiversity and community space.

Extended description

Urban food forests are public or community-managed green spaces designed to mimic the structure of natural forests while producing edible fruits, nuts, herbs and vegetables. Using multiple vegetation layers, they can improve biodiversity, cool neighbourhoods, store carbon, retain water and provide local food and social space. Unlike conventional parks, they combine ecological functions with food production and community stewardship.
