The Utrecht Model
World's Largest Bicycle Parking
Utrecht, Netherlands
Highlight
A 12,500-space underground bike garage that makes cycling and rail seamless without cluttering the surface.
Extended description
Next to Utrecht's central station, the Netherlands built the world's largest bicycle parking facility, a three-level underground garage for more than 12,500 bikes. Cyclists enter directly from bike lanes and ride inside on gentle ramps until they find a space. Integrated beneath the station square, it keeps public space open while making cycling-to-rail intermodality effortless, part of a wider strategy that puts the bicycle at the centre of urban planning.
