Wastewater-to-Renewable-Natural-Gas Resource Recovery

New York City, USA

Highlight

Turns wastewater treatment plants into urban energy hubs producing renewable natural gas for the grid.

Extended description

In New York City, the Department of Environmental Protection, with National Grid and partners, has turned wastewater treatment into energy production. Through co-digestion of organic waste with sewage sludge and gas-to-grid infrastructure, plants such as Newtown Creek capture biogas and upgrade it to renewable natural gas injected into the grid. This transforms wastewater plants into urban energy hubs, cutting emissions and recovering value from waste.
