Neighbourhood Energy Communities

Shared Local Renewable Energy (Solution Type)

Global (widely applicable)

Highlight

Residents and local organisations jointly produce and share renewable electricity within a neighbourhood.

Extended description

Neighbourhood energy communities allow residents, businesses and public organisations to jointly generate, consume, store and share renewable energy, typically from local solar installations. By pooling generation and demand, they can reduce energy costs, improve local energy resilience and broaden participation in the energy transition. The model is spreading under enabling regulation in Europe and elsewhere and can be adapted to many urban contexts.
