Nature-Based Coastal Protection
Living Shorelines (Solution Type)
Global (widely applicable)
Highlight
Uses wetlands, dunes, reefs and vegetation to reduce erosion and storm impacts while restoring ecosystems.
Extended description
Nature-based coastal protection uses ecosystems such as wetlands, mangroves, dunes, oyster reefs and coastal vegetation to reduce wave energy, erosion and storm-surge impacts. Unlike hard defences alone, living shorelines can adapt over time, store carbon and create habitat while protecting communities. Their suitability depends on local coastal conditions, but they are increasingly used as part of hybrid climate-adaptation strategies.
