Reflective Roofing to Reduce Urban Heat

International

Highlight

High-reflectance roofs reduce indoor temperatures, cooling demand and the urban heat-island effect.

Extended description

Cool roofs use highly reflective and emissive materials or coatings to reflect more solar radiation and release absorbed heat more efficiently than conventional dark roofs. This lowers roof and indoor temperatures, reduces air-conditioning demand and can help mitigate the urban heat-island effect when deployed at scale. The approach can be applied to new and existing buildings with relatively simple materials, making it a widely replicable heat-adaptation measure.
