Climate Shelters

Cool Public Spaces During Heatwaves (Solution Type)

Global (widely applicable)

Highlight

A network of accessible, cooler public spaces that protect vulnerable people during extreme heat.

Extended description

Climate shelters are public or community spaces, such as libraries, schools, parks or civic centres, identified and prepared to offer cooler, safer conditions during heatwaves. Networks can combine indoor air-conditioned facilities with shaded, green outdoor spaces and provide information and basic services. They are a relatively low-cost adaptation measure focused on reducing heat exposure, especially for vulnerable residents.
