Airborne Wind Energy (AWE)

High-Altitude Wind Power with Kites and Drones

International (developers in Europe and the USA)

Highlight

Captures stronger, steadier high-altitude winds using tethered kites or drones instead of conventional turbines.

Extended description

Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) systems generate electricity from high-altitude winds using tethered kites or autonomous drones. The flying wing pulls a cable connected to a ground generator, or carries small turbines aloft, harvesting stronger and steadier winds than conventional turbines can reach. Because they need far less steel and concrete and can be deployed in remote or offshore locations, AWE systems aim to cut the material footprint and cost of wind power.
