Adaptive reuse gives existing buildings new functions instead of demolishing and rebuilding them. Retaining structures and materials preserves much of the carbon already embodied in the building, reduces demolition waste and demand for new materials and can revitalise underused urban areas. Combined with energy retrofit, it is a key strategy for lowering both embodied and operational emissions in the built environment.
